About Waterton Lakes National Park

Waterton's 505 km² of peaks, lakes and prairie are anchored by a small lakeside townsite. It's known for wildflowers, the Crypt Lake hike, boat tours into Montana, abundant wildlife and famously strong winds. It's part of the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A brief history

Waterton was Canada's fourth national park, created in 1895 as the Kootenay Lakes Forest Reserve. In 1932, through the efforts of Rotary members from Alberta and Montana, it joined Glacier National Park in the United States to form the world's first International Peace Park.

RV tips

  • A Parks Canada pass is required. The townsite campground is popular, so book early.
  • Expect strong winds: retract awnings and secure gear.
  • The Kenow wildfire in 2017 affected much of the park. Check current trail and road status.

Before you go: Hours, road conditions, campground availability, passes and fire bans change. Check the official source below, 511 Alberta and Alberta Fire Bans before you travel. National parks need a Parks Canada pass, and Kananaskis needs a Conservation Pass.
