Nordegg & the Brazeau Collieries

Region: Central Alberta · Updated

A historic mining town and preserved coal mine in the foothills.

About Nordegg & the Brazeau Collieries

Nordegg is a small hamlet on the David Thompson Highway with a museum and guided tours of the historic Brazeau Collieries mine site. It's a gateway to Abraham Lake and the Bighorn backcountry.

A brief history

In 1907 Martin Cohn (later Nordegg) of the German Development Company scouted coal in the area. Coal production began in 1912, the railway arrived in 1913, and in 1914 the town was founded as one of Alberta's first planned communities and named in his honour.
