Maligne Lake & Maligne Canyon
Spirit Island's famous view, and a slot canyon more than 50 m deep.
About Maligne Lake & Maligne Canyon
Maligne Lake, about 44 km from Jasper, is roughly 22.5 km long with glaciers above it and the much-photographed Spirit Island, reached by boat tour. Closer to town, Maligne Canyon is a narrow slot canyon over 50 m deep, with bridges, waterfalls and, in winter, ice walks.
A brief history
The Stoney Nakoda knew the lake as Chaba Imne. In 1907, Samson Beaver drew a map of the route for explorer and artist Mary Schäffer, and in 1908 she reached the lake with Mollie Adams and guides Billy Warren and Sid Unwin.
