About Fort Macleod

Fort Macleod's historic downtown and its museum recall the arrival of the North-West Mounted Police in southern Alberta. It's a convenient base for Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump and a stop on the way to Waterton or the Crowsnest Pass.

A brief history

The town grew around a North-West Mounted Police fort built in 1874 and named for Commissioner James Macleod. Incorporated as the Town of Macleod in 1892, it officially took the name Fort Macleod in 1952.
